Young Carers Festival

According to the 2001 cencus, there are over 175,000 young carers in the UK today but what is a young carer?
 

• A young person aged 8 to 17 who has a care responsibility beyond their maturity.
  
• They might care for a sibling or relative with a disability, or a parent with an substance dependancy.
  

As part of our continued commitment to good causes, Special Media Projects work with the YMCA Fairthorn Group to provide an RSL radio station for the Young Carers Festival.

It all started 8 years ago when the organisers of the event wanted to provide something special, something different and a portal for the local community to “listen in” to the brilliant things that happen over the very exclusive weekend.

Over the years, the remit of the station, programmed and operated by Special media Projects remains the same: To provide a professional presenters with entertainment, information, interactivity and learning to the 2000 strong gathering of young carers.

As many of the young people as possible are encouraged to come into the pupose built studio vehicle and take control of the equipment, broadcasting their own show on real FM radio.
